Kids Will Be Kids – Magic Stix to the Rescue! (Review)

We have two problems in our house when it comes to markers. The first is that the kids are constantly leaving the caps off the markers, so they dry out. The second problem was the reason I finally banned markers from our home: writing on the walls. A thing on the shortlist of parents’ nightmares when it comes to naughty behavior.

Kids Will Be Kids! Magic Stix Markers can help you out - they are washable and WON'T DRY OUT with the cap off! #homeschool #kidcrafts

I had the opportunity to review the 24-pack of Magic Stix Washable Markers from The Pencil Grip, Inc. They make some claims that set them up for some pretty high expectations!

  • they are washable
  • they have no odor
  • they are guaranteed to not dry out if the cap is left off for up to a week!

You know I had to put them to the test on all of these claims! And one lucky winner will receive their own set of 24 Magic Stix Washable Markers directly from The Pencil Grip, Inc. By the way, this company makes other neat products for kids, such as mess free paint sticks.

This article originally appeared on my old blog, Townsley Times. If you came here looking for this particular article but thought you were going to a different site, never fear, you’re actually in the right place. 🙂

First Impressions

Magic Stix Washable Markers come in a clear carrying case with an insert that holds each marker in place so they don’t get jumbled around. The insert will pop out if you open it upside down, but it’s held in place by little tabs so it’s easy to push back down. The insert also makes it so it’s not so easy for a toddler to do a drive-by grab-and-go with his sisters’ markers, but I digress. The colors are just beautiful! The 24-pack comes with colors beyond the typical rainbow. They are truly bold and bright.

I like that the marker caps are all the same color and are not used as the indicator for the color of the marker. The markers are colored accordingly so if you get the caps switched around, it’s no big deal. Thumbs up!

The tips of the markers seem to be very nice quality. The color doesn’t run out if you are using the same one for awhile. It also doesn’t seem like cheap quality ink or whatever they typically use in kids’ markers. It really lays down some color!

The downside would be that you can’t use the backs of the pages you’ve already drawn on or colored, because it shows through. However, it doesn’t make the paper wet, so the integrity of the paper is still just fine after you’re done. Because it shows through, I wouldn’t suggest these for a coloring book.

Are Magic Stix really washable?

The walls are my main concern here. We rent, and our while our little artistes are well-versed in how to use a Magic Eraser, it’s also not good to allow or encourage writing on the walls, ya know, from a character building/obedience standpoint. But, the thing is, kids walk around with the markers and accidentally get it on stuff. Sometimes, that includes the walls.

I’m happy to report that it mostly comes off of walls with a soapy sponge and a bit of scrubbing (I think these walls are painted with eggshell or satin paint – you’d likely have a hard time with flat paint).

It also came off of our craft table (plastic folding table) very easily with just a damp sponge and no soap and really no scrubbing.

Two other things I wanted to test were clothes and skin.

It really didn’t come out of clothes, and some of the colors stained their skin more than others, as you can see in the video below of our cap test.

So, would I say their claim of being washable is true? More or less. They don’t stain like permanent marker, but they don’t just wash off all surfaces that easily, either.

I am VERY sensitive and bothered by odors. Doesn’t matter if something has a pleasant smell or a stench, if it smells because of chemicals, it’ll probably give me a headache. A lot of kids’ crafts supplies are made to be odorless, but some aren’t, and adult coloring supplies certainly do have a smell, a lot of the time. These do not, at least it is barely detectable. I put my nose right up to the tip and it has a very slight smell, but it doesn’t stink and it didn’t bother me. So, the claim that Magic Stix Washable Markers are odorless is true.

The Game Changer: Do they dry out?

The question everyone is dying to know the answer to! We did do the cap test to see if the Magic Stix would get dried out before a week was up. We left the cap off the black marker for a week. Here’s the scene: The marker was facing upward or sideways in the kitchen in their craft/art area. It is winter in Wisconsin so the air is pretty dry and we don’t use a humidifier.

We wrote and drew with it each day. (My six-year old struggles with backward letters and numbers still, and my four-year old is just learning to write, so she doodled instead – either way, we still completed the test.) I was a bit disappointed when I noticed some of the marks looking like the tip was dry on days 1 and 2 (24 and 48 hours of the cap being off). But I think it’s just how they were holding it, because when I tested it, it was fine. I think also that leaving it upside-down made it seem like it was drying out when it wasn’t, just like with an ink pen. Here’s a quick video to show the outcome.

You can also see on the company’s Instagram profile that they test these and the last time I checked, they were on day 91 of the cap test! They are doing more than just one color also.

I am comfortable recommending these to moms who find their kids leaving the caps off all the time. I think you’d be fine as long as the caps don’t go completely missing, and you’re using them often enough to keep the ink from stagnating. Not sure if that’s actually how it works, I’m not like a marker expert but it makes sense in my mind.
